In this blogpost it is my pleasure to share with you the gorgeous fiber preparation work of Debora Galaz, a very talented artist with a fantastic eye for colour! what follows is a photo stream, sharing the process of creating a batt on the drum carder. You can also find more of Debora’s work on her Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/colibri_felting/ and you can find her work for sale on Etsy at colibristudio.etsy.com

Whenever I want to create a batt, I look at the colors of roving I have hanging on my wall. This allows me to see what I have available and what colors I need to mix to create new ones.

Here I have chosen the colors of roving and also the elements I want to add for texture. In this case, silk thread, white noil,  Corn fibers and hand dyed Mulberry silk.

Here you can see the textural elements I will add to this batt as I feed it into my carder.
If you need to blend  three colors of roving to create a new color for your batt, place your first color down. As you feed it through the carder start to add the next colors in whatever order you want.
You can do the same with two colors. On the left are the original colors of roving. On the right is the result of the carded combinations of both colors
With the inspiration being a wide open sky, I arrange the colors I have chosen in the order I desire. Card slowly so you can arrange and adjust the colors as they are being fed.
Hand dyed Mulberry silk, directly onto the drum.

Adding white noil.
Adding silk thread which has a beautiful shine.

I grew up in Chile and my throughout my whole childhood I loved arts and working with a variety of media. I came to the U.S. at the age of 20 to finish my bachelor’s degree in Education. When my husband and I got pregnant with our first child, I decided to step away from the classroom and be a stay-at-home mom, but I needed some other channel for my creative energies. I was really drawn to wool so I bought a book about the traditional way of felting, and from then on I was hooked on this amazing material! In my years working with wet and needle felting I have loved everything about the process of creating with these techniques, Recently I bought a small carder to create batts and rolags, and I hand-dye my own roving and silk. This is an area where I see myself furthering my efforts in the near future, as I love to create my own unique and vibrant colors.
