tinyStudio Issue 32 is Here!

I often find that this time of year is ‘boost-time’ for me – we are past halfway through 2026, and here in Aotearoa New Zealand we are coming to the end of winter and the creativity is needing a refresh! It is then, a wonderful time for me to be bringing out Issue 32 of tinyStudio magazine, and it is an issue that also links to ‘time’ as we look back and the mysteries of ancient fibres, as well as look forward with a wedding, and creative ways to use found materials.

In this issue we continue with our focus on ancient crafts and learn more about the way our ancestors used fibre in the article by Kat Stasinska – this is really fascinating! Kat delves into the colours of medieval clothing and how they were dyed, and shares this information through her thoroughly researched article. There is so much to be discovered in these areas, not least because (as we know) textiles do not live forever and often, all we have to go on are mere fragments and scraps of ancient thread.

We also have a feature of some really contemporary work by Troy Dugas, his combination of story-telling and found materials is fantastic, along with the sheer scale of his works, it really makes me look at the items in my stash in a new way, and my visits to the op shop have a new focus!

I love the creativity of the weaving features by our weavers Louise, Vicki, and Ineke, lots of inspiration!

The paper spinning article by Lai is amazing, again, my op shop visits have a much wider focus and I am loving the opportunity also to challenge myself with ways to up-cycle and re-use found materials.

And speaking of collecting, you can’t miss the fabulous article by Lovina Youngman about her incredible spindle collection! This is an outstanding range of stunning spindles, and you can learn about each spindle type and why Lovina has this wide variety of tools (and uses every one of them!)

And last, but actually first, I am certain you will enjoy the article by the artist featured on our cover for this issue: Charlotte Roberts. Her colourwork and dyeing are delightful, plus you get to visit us through her travels and her sheep flock here in New Zealand!
